SQUEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!! YOU... ARE... WONDERFUL!!!!!!! *hands Harry back his caps-lock-o'-strong-emotion*
Now, a calmer, more rational deconstruction of the fic to explain why it is perfect:
1) the understanding of victim-hood without making it maudlin angst-filled shite- y'know, the way humans act instead of the Mary-Sue characterizations of most fics that handle ptsd.
2) the fact that - as was commented earlier - they are adults and [my pet peeve] MALE! They deal with their emotions, but don't spend hours sighing over each other or being described in terms that are femanizing. Aaron's eyes may seem deep pools of emotion and Spencer's build and bone-structure may be considered delicate, but damnit, neither of them would appreciate that being said to them during sex!
3) equal power-sharing in bed. I do NOT understand what about Reid's character comes across as 'Oh, me on top? No thanks. I'll just be getting shagged while tatting a doily underneath you.' Yes, he wears waistcoats, but he also argues toe to toe with anyone on the team if he feels justified. And, YES, Hotch went through hell at Foyet's hand, but what about him makes people think he would not be brave enough to want to be on the bottom in a committed relationship with someone he trusts?! [Damn, I hate a subject that leads me to an interobang; I just feel quite forceful on this issue.] It is nice whenever I feel that an author has some ideas about how adult relationships play out in the bedroom.
and 4) Yay to great characterization and writing! The fact that this section, "Aaron grabbed Spencer’s hand and looked Spencer directly in the eyes. “I’d like you to take me,” he said firmly.
Spencer blinked. “Are you certain?”
Aaron blushed slightly but didn’t look away. “Yes.”
“But with what Foyet did… we don’t have to do this right away. We can work up to it, if it’s really what you want. But we don’t have to do it at all.”
“I want this, Spencer. I want you. Are you saying that you don’t want to do this?”
“I won’t deny that I’ve thought about it. From time to time.” Spencer blushed. “Frequently.”
Aaron kissed him. “Then get on with it,” he said gently.
“I just don’t want to push you or make you uncomfortable.”
“I’ll let you know if you do.” Aaron then forestalled any further argument by starting to stroke Spencer’s cock.
“That’s an unfair negotiation trick,” Spencer moaned.
Aaron chuckled and kissed Spencer’s ear. “Not one I usually teach at the Academy,” he breathed, “but I do stress that it’s important to be adaptable and to tailor your negotiation strategies to the individual.” He added a little twist to his stroke and Spencer gasped."
is so very realistic to the characters that I could swear it was canonical. Neither man has a great deal of experience in terms of number of partners, but they both have a lot of experience with events that are of great import to each other. Also, extremely hot.
So, in short [and if by 'in short', I mean 'in long', and I do] brilliant!
