Re: Holmes and Watson

Wow. I sometimes forget just how open the Internet really is and how anyone, really, can read anything that you post. It’s always interesting when my online fannish hobbies combine with my real life existence. That said, I am also very excited to be taking your seminar.

I “rediscovered” the Sherlock Holmes stories earlier this year (I had first read them when I was a teenager), and I absolutely love them. One of the things that really intrigues me is the interaction between Holmes and Watson (whatever their relationship). While the stories are often Watson’s tribute to Holmes’ intellect, there is also a very tangible friendship that last decades and overlays all of the tales.

At the risk of sounding like a bit of a geeky fan, I recently purchased your New Annotated Sherlock Holmes books and wanted to say that they are great. I’ve read your very informative introduction and have looked through some of the stories. The information provided is just wonderful. While I doubt that I’ll bring them to the UCLA seminar (they’re not exactly light), I just wanted to say that I really enjoy them and all the work that you did.

I look very forward to being in your seminar in February.

Thank you,
Michelle
