Wonderfully sweet story. My only concern is the reference to Watson spending Christmas 1881 returning to England. I think the conventional meeting date for the boyz is early 1881.
Regardless, my favorite parts of your fic were: Watson wallowing in self-pity because he didn't think Holmes cared whether he went away on holiday or not (sniffle); Holmes stroking Watson's hair (very tender); and Holmes refusing to leave Watson's side for an instant (even falling asleep in the chair after serenading Watson to sleep--awww!). I agree that the "I shall have to guard myself against you" line is weighted with lovely, angsty possibilities.
I, too, hope there will be a slashy sequel. You've set the stage in quite beautiful and subtle ways. Wonderful that the first thing Watson thinks to do with his track winnings is buy Holmes a gift. And not just "a" gift but the right gift. And Holmes' gift for Watson is quite intimate--monogrammed, no less. The image of them taking a short walk afterward, arm-in-arm, is so satisfying. *sighs*
