I did actually contemplate having a specific reference to the war but, as you noted, there didn't seem to be anything particularily significant about that month. And, since the idea of this series is a brief moment in time every other August (1912, 1914, now 1916, and future installments in 1918 and 1920), I just picked a random date because Watson would date his letters.
