Talk about a surreal moment…

I was out all day, and came home to find my mother on the Internet. Not at all unusual. But then she called me over.

“Who wrote this story?” she asked.

“What story?” I said.

“This great story about Harry Potter.”

I looked over her shoulder and saw she was reading Gladly Beyond Any Experience by [livejournal.com profile] femmequixotic from the [livejournal.com profile] snarry_olympics. She must have found the story in the browser’s memory or something.

“Er…” I said.

“It’s really well written,” Mom gushed.

“Er…” I continued helplessly.

“This person should be a professional writer,” she enthused. “This is better than what J.K. does.”

Panic began to set in. I realized that I had really better warn her about what she was reading. “Just to let you know, Snape and Harry kind of get together.” I said, very, very quietly.

“Oh, I already figured that out,” she replied. “Now go away so I can read this.”

I left.

The last I heard she was at the point where Severus and Harry go to eat at the gay bar.

Yes, my almost 60 year old mother has discovered NC-17 Snarry. I don’t know whether to laugh or crawl up in a hole and die. Not that I have a problem with her reading Snarry (because everyone should read Snarry). But I don’t want to know she’s doing it. And I really don’t want her to know I’m reading it. My god, what if she asks me for recs?!

ETA: My mother just finished the story and said, "Oh, that was so cute!" Then she wanted to talk about it. I'm feigning exhaustion and hiding in my bedroom.

That is too mortifying for words! Would steering her towards het and gen make you more comfortable? Give her a mammoth story to read, like AYLNO, or something. It'll give you time to plot your escape...

I have no idea what would make this less mortifying. There are just certain aspects of one's life that one likes to keep separate -- like one's mother and HP slash (or really any HP fanfic). I know that since she really seems to like the story, she's going to ask me about fics.

Hmmm... mammoth story... escape... good idea... I could always send her to Telanu's Tea Series. She'll be so engrossed she'll never even notice me sneaking out.

Glad I could help! If it ever happens to me, I'll be shuffling off this mortal coil from an attack of cringing XD

(also, *icon love*!)

Ouch. Poor baby. That's really like the worst thing you could have come home to- though be thankful, she could have been reading something aweful... like Drarry! :P

I'd be mortified as well if my mother started reading fanfiction, of any kind. Saying that however, I was just as creeped out when my littlest sister started asking me about slash and fanfic and 'how to men do that?' O_O...

Ooh... little sister questions. Yikes. That's got to be awkward. I'm even happier now that I'm an only child.

Yeah, I really wasn't expecting to come home to Mom reading Snarry. Had I known, I would have stayed out... for days. Well, I suppose I should be grateful that she wasn't reading a non-con...

She just finished the story and thought it was "cute". She wants to talk about it. I'm hiding in my room.

This makes me feel so ... old ... strange?

I'm trying to get my 23 year old daughter interested in reading Snarry stories, but she's resisting all the way. Perhaps she feels like you in reverse?

Yep. I bet your daughter's reading lots and lots of Snarry but just doesn't want you to know.

It's not that my Mom's too old to read Snarry. It's just that I don't want to know about it -- or more accurately I don't want her to know about my reading habits. Mom is incredibly cool and open and all sorts of good things, but there are some things I just don't want to discuss with her.

Maybe you need to break your daughter in slowly... start with a threesome or another pairing and then work your way to exclusive Snarries.

If it makes you feel better, my father reads and critiques MY slash stories. You get used to it, it's a sign you've grown up. :)

Well, Mom's read some of the stuff I'd written with [livejournal.com profile] arrmaitee -- you know, the parodies -- so it's not as if she had no idea that slash was out there. But it was just a bit... er... surprising to come home to her reading Snarry. It was very surreal. Funny, but surreal.

*snickers quietly* Isn't it kind of scary? I do sort of feel your pain though in a way; my mother recently discovered Queer as Folk....and she would slap my hand holding the remote control trying to fast forward through the sex scenes while saying, "Don't! This is good stuff." *facepalm*

SQUEEEEEEEE!!!
daylyn you've made my day! Your mum is older than me and she likes Snarry? Well done to her! I bet she'll start reading all sorts of slash now. Talk about teaching us old dogs new tricks.
Maybe, like me, she'll progress to writing it? Then you can REALLY squirm.

kinda reminds me of when i found out my (then 16) year old cousin was reading slash (she's 18 now). but i think the main thing with myshock with her was that she's usually so... conservative. not like liberal conservative conservative (she's v. v. liberal), but she's usually so modest in dress and actions...

Yikes! I only saw a few QAF episodes (I didn't have the channel until a little while ago), but that was pretty... er... racy. Well, at least your Mom liked it. But watching it with her must have been interesting.

It was just so surprising to come home and finding my Mom reading Snarry. And she just kept gushing about how good the story way. In fact, [livejournal.com profile] arrmaitee called today while I was out, she was gushing to him about it as well. Of course, he thinks it's hysterical, so he was probably encouraging her to find more stories. In fact, she now knows that it's called Snarry because of that conversation.

*headdesk*

My life is so bizarre at times.

Yep. Mom just found Snarry. Mom likes Snarry. I just know she's going to want to read more Snarry. But the second she starts asking me about Snarry non-cons, I'm hiding under a rock. And if she starts writing Snarry non-con... I think my head might just explode a little.

She hasn't started asking for recs... yet. But I'm sure she will.

Hee! It's so funny when you find out that people you don't expect are into slash. I just know that this is just the tip of the iceberg for my Mom. She's going to start looking for all sorts of stories.

Life is quite strange at times.

My mum had me print out my Snarry Lympics fic so she could bring it down to her friend's house so she, her son, her husband, and her daughter could all read it.

This was after my mum found a Snarry, dubconsent, chan fic. Yay.

My writing is a secret to no one in my family.
